This is the acceleration of all free-falling objects near the Earth’s surface, a value represented simply by the letter ‘g’.

Thus, we have a theory that accounts for the value of the known acceleration due to gravity. In fact, if we replace the mass of Earth by the mass of any other planet, and the radius of Earth by the corresponding radius of the other planet, the above formula allows us to determine the value of g on any planet or astronomical object in the universe! For example, the value of g on the Moon is approximately 1.6 meters per second squared, or about one-sixth the value on Earth. Thus, objects on the Moon weigh one-sixth as much as they do on Earth. This formula also allows us to solve for the acceleration due to gravity at any distance above Earth’s surface. Replace rE with any r greater than rE.

Sample Problem

(a)Calculate the gravitational force of attraction between a 2,000-kg car and a 12,000-kg truck, separated by 0.5 m.

(b)What happens to this force if the distance between them doubles to 1.0 m?
